Dubai: Christmas menu tasting at Galeries Lafayette Le Gourmet

Galeries Lafayette Le Gourmet, Dubai

I am still walking around with a smile on my face after last Tuesday’s delicious Christmas menu tasting at Lafayette Gourmet. Since my Teflon brain managed to forget most details regarding the food before I’d even left Dubai Mall, I haven’t been able to provide you with further information on all the delicious stuff we had. Now I’ve received an email with all the facts about the different courses, so here is, as I promised earlier, a more in-depth presentation of the menu.

First we were served some delicious canapé-style pre-dinner snacks. One of these was Scotch egg with duck confit, quail egg and Piccalilli, which is a kind of Indian-inspired pickled vegetables. Those teeny-tiny eggs looked so adorable that I almost didn’t have the heart to eat them (though they tasted nice). There was also a duck and chestnut chipolata with spiced blueberries and turkey rolls with cranberry dip.

My absolute favorite this evening was the Maple Cured Scottish smoked salmon, which we had as a starter. It was so tender it melted in my mouth! I could easily have eaten ten portions of that, but I restrained myself and only had one of them…. or was it two … or three .. or..ok, honestly.. four.

The main course was turkey and baked prime rib of beef. Not exactly traditional Danish Christmas fare, but the goose and the pork belly roast should start looking over their shoulder and consider turkey and prime rib serious competitors for the Danish Christmas table. The potatoes were roasted in duck fat and tasted delicious and exactly like the ones we had at our wedding party in September. I’m a bit more skeptical towards that Yorkshire pudding. I’ve had the dubious pleasure of Yorkshire pudding several times the last couple of years and I still have severe difficulties getting the point of it. It doesn’t taste of anything and it takes up too much space on my plate, -Yorkshire pudding, you’ve had your chance, and you failed..again.

The dessert was a Christmas pudding ice cream, which was really, really delicious and almost as good as my all time favorite, Ben & Jerry’s Chocolate Fudge Brownie. Judging from the rich creamy taste, it probably wasn’t “healthy choice no 1”, but then again, it’s only Christmas (or Christmas menu tasting) once a year.
