With so many new places opening all the time down here, you sometimes forget the good old ones. The first year we lived in Dubai, we were at Trader Vic’s (the JBR one) several times each month, but it’s been almost a year since my last visit, which is quite a shame, as their cocktails are among the best, biggest, strongest and the cheapest (wow, that was a lot of superlatives) in Dubai.
“Dessert” that comes with a straw doesn’t have to be a bad thing, and we worked our way through most of the cocktail list. Of course we had the legendary Tiki Puka Puka, and the Trader Vic’s Mai Tai, but it was the Samoan Fog Cutter, which made my parents’ hearts beat faster. This drink is massive, and it comes in one of the tackiest drink cups in Dubai.
Yesterday, there was a fire in The Torch, which is a 79-floor apartment building in Dubai Marina close to where we live (the person naming this building must be biting his tongue these days). Poul and I are looking for a new apartment, and our preferences have been high-floor locations, as they’re usually more quiet and with a nicer view, but when things like that happen, it really makes you think. Maybe a lower floor would be a safer choice, should you have to jump out of the window.
I’ve spent most of the day today hunting for a new apartment and I’m optimistic. There are a lot of good rentals available out there, so I wouldn’t be surprised, if we’ve found something by the end of next week. I’ll keep you updated..
