A while ago I met with Shinae for lunch. I had a 50% Groupon voucher for Hyu Korean Restaurant, which was about to expire, so that determined the place for our lunch date. Shinae is Korean, so she could tell me about the dishes and Korean food, while we ate.
I was curious to try something else than just the usual bibimbap, so I put Shinae in charge of ordering the food. We had a really delicious beef rib soup, Korean pancake and, oh well, bibimbap. All the food was very tasty, and the staff seemed nice, but they were busy unpacking deliveries, so we didn’t see much of them. Shinae noticed that at the nicer restaurants in Korea, the owner will always be there to greet you and to say goodbye, when you leave, but at Hyu (and most other Korean restaurants I’ve visited in Dubai) the owner has outsourced that duty to other staff members.
We were the only guests in the restaurant at that time, but we were seated in one of the small booths, which was separated from the rest of the rooms by screens, so we didn’t feel too uncomfortable in the empty restaurant.
While the food was nice, the long ride to get there and the absence of other restaurant guests were quite a turn off, but maybe Hyu is one of those places which is asleep during the day and first really comes alive around dinner time?
Update: Hyu has now moved to a new location in JLT which makes it a lot more accessible from Dubai Marina where I live. The interior is also much nicer, and the restaurant seems busier now.
