I visited Kenya back in 2012 and this is a post from my old blog
I had noticed eight friendly looking cows grazing the outdoor areas at the hospital, and it turns out that in addition to looking friendly, they are also providing the hospital with fresh milk every day.
Milk is served along with the breakfast, so every morning I have a warm chai latte with milk almost straight from the cow. The cows are milked 2-3 times a day, and when it’s time, the cows find their way to the small shed, where the milking takes place.
I was curious about the milking, which is done manually, so yesterday I went to have a look at the process, and tried milking a cow myself. All the cows have names, which they respond to, and John, who looks after the cows, told me that they also have a certain sequence for the milking. If any of the cows breaks the sequence, the other cows will object.
