NYC: Dim Sum Go Go in Chinatown – Dim sum for one

NYC: Dim Sum Go Go in Chinatown - Dim sum for one

I think we can all agree that dim sum is nicest, when you can order many different kinds of small dishes to try, so even though I love dim sum, I only rarely visit dim sum restaurants as it requires getting a group of friends together to make it feasible and fun.

I was therefore excited to hear about Dim Sum Go Go, which is a restaurant in Chinatown that serves dim sum sample platters with 10 different pieces, making it ideal for solo diners with a dumpling appetite.

There a vegetarian version of the platter and a seafood/meat version. I ordered the seafood/meat platter, and it only took a couple of minutes from I placed my order until a steaming hot basket of delicious dumplings landed at my table.

The dumplings looked beautiful and came with three different sauces including a delicious ginger-scallion sauce that I ate with everything. I later asked the staff if certain sauces were supposed to go with certain dumplings, but they assured me I could dip any dumpling in any sauce that I liked.

The dumplings were delicious but the skin was so tender that it was quite a challenge to get a good photo, as they would break when I picked them up with my chopsticks. I particularly liked the rose-colored, rose shaped chicken dumpling, but they were all delicious.

The prices had gone up a notch compared to what was stated in the online reviews that first steered me towards Dim Sum Go Go, but $20.95 (2024) is still very reasonable for a 10pcs mixed dim sum platter at a Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant.

In addition to the dim sum platter, Dim Sum Go Go is also known for the Shrimp & Mango Rolls, which are breaded dumplings with mango wrapped with shrimp paste in rice paper. Apparently Dim Sum Go Go is the only restaurant in Chinatown to make this kind of dumplings, so I felt that I had to give them a try. They looked a bit like mozzarella sticks, and the taste and texture were also similar to mozzarella sticks. To be honest, I wasn’t impressed, and I wouldn’t order them again. Instead I’m curious about the rice noodle rolls (cheung fun). At Dim Sum Go Go they have four different kinds to choose among and they all sounded delicious, so they’re on my list for a future visit.
