In Scandinavia we celebrate Christmas on Christmas Eve the 24th, so we are almost done with Christmas 2019, but in the US they are just getting started. My friend Mende is finishing her MBA in London these days, but she has flown back to the States to spend the holidays with her family in Alabama, so I asked her, if she could tell us a little about her southern Christmas:
On Christmas morning, we wake up and open gifts. For a small breakfast we have pigs in a blanket (sausage rolls) with coffee or hot chocolate. Later on Christmas day, we go to my grandparents’ house to eat ham, turkey, mashed potatoes, butter beans, green beans, potato salad, macaroni & cheese, and cole slaw with dinner rolls and cornbread. For dessert, we have a chocolate pecan pie & a strawberry cake, which we buy from Edgar’s Bakery (a local institution in Birmingham!). After the Christmas meal at my grandparents’ place, we open another round of gifts. Then we watch football and nap after our food comas!!
As you can see in the photo, Alabamians like to go way overboard with Christmas decorations! LOL. Oh, and one important thing I forgot… I watch every Hallmark Christmas movie, plus I have to get in at least one watching of National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation!

My friend Mende in London/NYC/Alabama
Mende is from Alabama but she used to live in New York City, which is where we met. She is into fine dining and traveling, so of course we clicked from the very beginning. In addition to our NYC escapades, we also visited Madrid together a couple of years ago, and I hope we get to travel more together in the years to come.
