NYC: When Sanne met Katz’s Delicatessen

Katz's Delicatessen, New York

Katz’s Delicatessen is probably most known for providing the settings for Meg Ryan’s famous fake orgasm in “When Harry Met Sally”, but it’s actually a very old, very loved Lower East Side institution. I walked by around dinnertime, but I was scared away by the hordes of tourists and the long lines stretching all the way out on the street.

When I came back a couple of hours later, around 10pm, it all seemed more manageable, and I went inside. The pastrami sandwiches at Katz are supposed to be second to none, but I’m not much of a pastrami girl, so I decided to have a bagel with cream cheese and lox instead.

I lined up for what I thought was the bagel queue. It wasn’t. It was the sandwich queue, and apparently bagels aren’t sandwiches, but bagels, so *swoosh* on to the bagel queue.

The guy behind the counter, who prepared my bagel, was fun and enthusiastic. Maybe he just started his shift, maybe he just loved serving awesome bagels, but nonetheless, he was a very nice guy with great bagel skills.

The bagel was perfectly toasted and didn’t steal the attention from the heavenly union of lox and cream cheese. It was exquisite! When you’ve first had fresh cream cheese in New York, you’ll never be able to go back to Philadelphia again.

PS: I have a confession to make: I’ve never watched When Harry Met Sally. I don’t know why, but I guess it was one of those movies I was a little too young to understand when it premiered back in 1989, and which I just never had managed to find time to watch later.

The same applies to E.T. I was scared of all sorts of monsters, when I was a kid (even the cute ones) so my childhood was 100% free from E.T., even though I went through a phase, when I thought E.T. was hiding in the toilet bowl..weird, I know. You would be surprised to see all the missing lines in my movie cv..
