It was my friend Alex, who told me about an art show at the Con Artist Collective on Ludlow Street a couple of weeks ago. At the event, you could purchase postcard-sized original pieces from the members of the artist collective, all priced at $20. The collective is a community of emerging and established artists, and they frequently arrange events to showcase the works of their more than 500 artists, with the gallery/workspace on Ludlow functioning as a platform. It sounded like a fun way to spend a Thursday evening, while at the same time supporting the local art scene, so I signed up too.
Before the event, we met for dive bar drinks and dumplings, so we were a bit tipsy, when we arrived. I don’t know if that explains why I bought a piece picturing a sanitary napkin and two tampons on a subway train, without realizing that it was in fact a sanitary napkin and two tampons. I just saw some abstract figures attached to the train floor with what looked like cords. I still think it’s a cool piece though, and I’m happy that I bought it.
The other painting that I got has this burst of colors intruding from one side, almost taking up the entire frame. I think it would have looked even greater on a larger canvas.
The tampon painting is by an artist named Christy Bencosme and the one with the colors is by an artist named Michael K.
