NYC: The Standard Grill with the Tinas

The Standard Grill, Meatpacking District, New York

I had really been looking forward to our late night dinner at The Standard Grill, and WOW, what a place. The people, the food and the awesome (and very strong) cocktails, – everything was brilliant!

I had chicken liver as a starter. It came as a pâté and tasted like foie gras, and it was so delicious, I literally licked my plate. I had fettuccine with mushroom sauce as a main course, but we shared all our main courses, so I also got more than my fair share of Tina’s juicy New York Strip.

The Standard Grill is located in super trendy The Standard hotel, just below The High Line. It’s a real institution at the Meatpacking dining scene, and if you want to eat in the middle of all the action, I cannot come up with a better place.

The menu includes oysters, chicken liver and more solid dishes such as New York Strips and Porterhouse steaks, and the food and service is surprisingly good, considering that The Standard Grill is extremely busy most of the time. The restaurant is divided into a bar/bistro section and a main dining room. If you get the chance, ask for a table in the main dining room, which is less crowded and with a better ambience.

The Standard Grill is almost open around the clock, but book a table around 8-9 in the evening on a Friday night, and you will have a perfect starting point for a night out in Meatpacking District. The cocktail menu at The Standard Grill is awesome, and the cocktails are really delicious and strong.  Go for the Penny Drop, which offers a lot of bang (booze) for your buck.

There is no official dress code, but if you are not an A-lister, you will probably feel a bit under-dressed in sneakers and a fanny pack. After dinner, I can recommend visiting The Standard roof top bar Le Bain, for even more tasty cocktails and a great view of the city. The doors at Le Bain can be a bit tough, which is yet another reason to dress up.

• A main course costs $ 25-35 and cocktails are around $12 + tips.

• The entire floor of the restaurant is covered in copper pennies, which looks really cool! I have already started saving my pennies ..
