The Shibuya Toast is like a super-charged version of French toast, and only your imagination sets the limits. The dessert originated in Shibuya in Tokyo, but quickly gained popularity in most of the big Asian cities. If there’s such a things as an it-dessert, then the it-dessert in Bangkok right now is Shibuya Toast and After You is the place to get it.
The latest Bangkok crazes are usually short-lived but it seems like the Shibuya Toast at After You is here to stay. One of the reasons why, is probably that it doesn’t just look good on Instagram, it actually very tasty. Soft, buttery bread cubes are hiding inside the outer, crispy shell and on top of that is your choice of fresh berries, honey or, in my case, Nutella and vanilla ice cream.
The Shibuya Toasts come in two sizes: Baby and Regular. The regular size is big enough for two persons to share, so if you’re visiting After You on your own, a Baby Size dessert will probably be more than enough.
There are several After You branches in Bangkok, but this one in Thonglor is the original, and I think it’s the nicest one of the branches around. Thonglor is a posh and trendy area, and the people munching at After You are predominantly hi-so Thais and Asian expats from the neighborhood.
The most popular time to visit After You is after dinner. At this time, you can expect quite a long wait to get a table, as people tend to linger over their desserts. I would suggest that you go around noon or in the early afternoon instead, when the café is less busy. In addition to Shibuya Toast, you can also get a number of other, tempting desserts at After You.
• The Baby Size Sticky Toast with Nutella and ice cream, which I had, was 185THB.
• The After You branches in Siam Paragon and Central World are also very popular.
• After you is located a little more than 1km from Thonglor BTS Station. It’s too long to walk, so take a taxi or a motorbike taxi (if you dare). It’s a wonderfully vibrant area with a large number of Japanese expats, so if you’re looking for dinner, there are plenty of good Japanese restaurants to choose among.
