Brød & Snaps is a Danish smørrebrød restaurant in the center of Fredericia. It opened a couple of years ago, and the focus on smørrebrød (Danish open-faced sandwiches) and house-made snaps (a Danish infused spirit, typically served ice cold with smørrebrød) quickly proved to be a winning concept. It was actually my parents who first told me about Brød & Snaps, and when Trine and I we stopped by, the crowd definitely skewed older, which I took as a good sign. The older locals in Fredericia tend to be picky, so if they keep coming back, you know the place is doing something right.
The smørrebrød on the menu is named after people who have had ties to the city throughout history, so you can order things like Cohrs Roast Beef and Søofficer Peter Buhl’s pan-fried plaice. It’s a nice touch, especially if you’re from Fredericia and recognize some of the names.
Trine and I both love smørrebrød, so the hardest part was deciding what to get. We ended up ordering Fæstningsbyens Natmad (Brød & Snap’s take on dyrlægens natmad, a classic Danish smørrebrød with liver pâté and salt-cured beef), Generalmajor Olaf Rye’s Stegte Sild (pan-fried marinated herring), Handelsmand Bertel Bruun’s butter-toasted white bread with shrimp, and Generalløjtnant Frederik Bülow’s steak tartare.
At Brød & Snaps, they make their own snaps, and the selection changes depending on what they have available. I had hoped to try the sea buckthorn snaps, but it was sold out that day, so I went with one infused with blood orange instead, while Trine had one with tarragon and ginger. Both were really good and paired nicely with the smørrebrød, which was generously topped and beautifully presented.
A really good spot for lunch, and maybe a snaps or two on the side.
