The Restaurant at Børkop Watermill – Really Good Food in a Beautiful Setting

The restaurant at Børkop Watermill, Denmark

A short drive from Comwell Kellers Park, Børkop Vandmølle (Børkop Watermill) is beautifully set among forest and water. The current mill dates back to the early 1800s, but there has been a mill on this site since the 1500s, probably even earlier.

There’s also a gourmet restaurant here, run by Konrad Konradsson and Sigga Gudbrandtsdottir. The menu is modern Nordic with a few subtle fusion touches. Over the past couple of years, the restaurant has really started to get noticed, both by locals and by traveling food lovers, so I was curious to see what all the buzz was about.

At lunch, you can choose between two or three courses, and there’s also a small à la carte menu. We both went for two courses, which turned out to be more than enough.

I had seared white fish, I think it was ling, served with asparagus salad and a dill cream. It was listed as a starter, but the portion was easily the size of a main. The fish was perfectly cooked and tasted great.

For dessert, I had glazed meringue with rhubarb compote, berry soup, and vanilla ice cream. It looked beautiful and tasted even better, with the tart rhubarb balancing everything nicely.

The bread is also worth mentioning. It was a sourdough with a deep yellow color, probably from turmeric, and it was really moist.

Trine had both the starter and the main, so she also got the fish, plus a chicken breast stuffed with herbs, served with baked plum tomatoes and basil cream. It was a lot of food, and she was definitely full when we left.

When we visited, the mill itself was closed for restoration, so we didn’t get to see it. But the setting is fantastic, and I would have happily stayed longer if we hadn’t been heading on to Christiansfeld. A really lovely spot for lunch in beautiful surroundings.

Mitzie Mee - Sanne

Welcome to my blog about The Heart of Jutland. I grew up in a small village just outside Fredericia, so this part of Denmark has always had a special place in my heart. Even after many years of traveling around the world, this is still where I feel at home. Fredericia is the city where I spent most of my childhood, and it is also the place I think of as home when people ask where I’m from. Later in life I worked at the hospital in nearby Kolding, and for several years I flew out of Billund Airport as cabin crew. Through work, family, and everyday life, I have therefore spent a lot of time in this area and had plenty of opportunities to explore the towns, the countryside, and the coastline. There is truly a lot to experience here. Historic towns, beautiful nature, great restaurants, and plenty of things to see and do. It is also one of the easiest parts of Denmark to visit, whether you are flying into Billund or traveling through Jutland. Here on the blog I share my favorites from the Heart of Jutland. The restaurants I keep coming back to, cafés that are worth a stop, and the places and experiences I would recommend if you want to discover some of the best that the Heart of Jutland has to offer.
