Korean Fish Cake (Eomuk) at Masan Fish Market

Korean Fishcake (Eomuk) at Masan Fish Market

When I was visiting Ella in Korea, we went to Masan Fish Market, which is close to Ella’s old home. The market is a real foodie paradise, with so much delicious seafood, it will make your head spin.

Korean Fish Cake (Eomuk 어묵), is a popular snack made from minced fish mixed with starch, egg and various seasonings, and the texture is somewhat chewy and bouncy. You’ll find the best fish cake in the southern part of the country in the area around Busan (Masan included), where fresh seafood is abundant and of very high quality.

At the market, Ella showed me her favorite fish cake vendor, and after watching how the delicious treats were made, we had to try some.

Korean fish cake come in many different kinds of shapes and flavors, and at Ella’s favorite vendor, I think there were five or six different kinds to choose among. It’s an inexpensive snack, so it’s easy to over-order, but we were heading back to Ella’s place for yet another cooking session, so we only had one fish cake each. After careful consideration we settled for one with chili and one with cheese, and they were both delicious.

I’ve had many more fish cakes after my first taste at Masan Fish Market, but I haven’t tried any half as good as the ones Ella and I had, so if you’re visiting Masan Fish Market, make sure you try the eomuk from this shop.

Welcome to my travel blog. This is where I share the places I go, the food I eat, and everything in between. I write about the experiences that stay with me long after I’ve unpacked: a view that stops you in your tracks, a local market tucked away on a side street, or just a really good coffee in a new city. Thanks for being here, let’s see where this goes.
