I landed in Nice just in time for lunch, so after a short stop at the hotel, I hurried out to find a place to eat. I walked by a small bistro in the neighborhood, and when I saw that they had tartiflette as the dish of the day, I didn’t even hesitate. That was where I was going to have lunch.
Tartiflette is a French dish with lots of melted Reblochon cheese, potatoes, bacon, and onions—and it tastes amazing. I was first introduced to tartiflette many years ago by a French classmate, and it’s been one of my favorite comfort foods ever since.
The restaurant was called Chez Véro, and as I stepped inside, I was greeted warmly by a French lady. In the open kitchen, a man was busy cooking, and I got the feeling they might be a married couple. They didn’t speak much English, and I don’t speak much French, but we managed to get by just fine, and I even ordered “une grande bottle of Pellegrino” without any trouble.
The place had a super cozy vibe, like having lunch at a friend’s house, and it seemed like the kind of restaurant with a solid group of regulars. A few tables away, an elderly French woman was completely immersed in her newspaper and didn’t even notice I had come in. Eventually, she looked up, saw me sitting nearby, and raised her glass of red wine with a warm, heartfelt “Bon Appétit!”
Welcome to Nice 🙂
