Shiroan is a traditional Japanese sweet paste made from white beans. Unlike its more common counterpart, anko (sweet red bean paste), shiroan is lighter in color and has a smoother, some might say more delicate flavor.
Shiroan is made from white beans and sugar, so it’s naturally dairy-free. Shiroan from the Japanese brand Maeda is free from additives and stands out for its refined consistency and gentle sweetness coming from carefully selected sugar and mizuame (a sweetener made from starch).
Shiroan is perfect for classic Japanese treats like oshiruko (sweet bean soup), daifuku mochi (mochi filled with sweet bean paste), and ichigo daifuku (mochi filled with a strawberry and sweet bean paste), but it also works wonderfully in Western-style desserts.
