Mercado do Livramento in Setúbal: One of Portugal’s Best Food Markets

Mercado do Livramento is the main market in Setúbal. It’s a very local market where people actually come to shop, and when we visited, there weren’t many tourists.

This is also where many of the city’s restaurants source their fish, so the standard in the seafood section is high. It’s by far the largest part of the market, and you’ll find everything from the sea here. One of the stalls was selling fresh local oysters, shucked to order and served with different sauces. Of course we couldn’t resist, so we had two each, and they were so good.

Afterwards, we stopped by Casa das Bifanas inside the market. Bifanas are a classic Portuguese sandwich with thinly sliced pork that’s been simmered for hours, and the version here was excellent, with juicy meat and a really good roll.

For dessert, we each picked up a cake from a small stall called Docinho de Mel. It was a kind of pastry with fruit and a honey filling, and it tasted really good.

If you’re into food, you should definitely visit Mercado do Livramento. It’s bigger, better, and more authentic than the markets we visited in Lisbon. Walk around, take in the atmosphere, try a few things, and see what catches your eye.

Tips for visiting Mercado do Livramento in Setúbal

How to get to Mercado do Livramento

It’s an easy trip from Lisbon. By car, it takes about 45 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic. You’ll usually cross the 25 de Abril Bridge, which is part of the experience in itself, especially on a clear day. Traffic can get heavy during rush hour and weekends, so it’s best to avoid late afternoon if you can.

It’s close enough for a half day trip, but if you’re going for the food, it’s worth slowing down and making a proper day out of it.

Getting there by public transportation
You can take the train from Lisbon to Setúbal, and it’s a straightforward trip. Trains run regularly, and the journey takes about an hour. From Setúbal station, it’s a 15–20 minute walk to Mercado do Livramento.

Go early if you want the full experience

Mercado do Livramento is open Tuesday to Sunday from 7:30am to 2pm but mornings are when the market is at its best. That’s when locals are doing their shopping, the seafood counters are fully stocked, and the energy is high. By midday, it’s still nice, just calmer and with slightly less selection. We got a late start and didn’t arrive until just before noon. There was still plenty of activity, but we missed the early morning rush.

The seafood section is the main attraction
This is what you’re here for. It’s large, busy, and very much a working market. Expect everything from whole fish to shellfish and oysters, and don’t be surprised if it feels a bit hectic.

Eat while you’re there
There are several small food stalls inside the market, and some of them are really good. Casa das Bifanas is a classic stop, but keep your eyes open. If something looks good, it probably is.

Look at the tiles
The azulejo tiles are easy to miss if you’re focused on the food, but they’re worth a pause. They depict scenes from fishing and everyday life in Setúbal and add a lot of character to the space.

It’s a local market, not a tourist setup
Don’t expect curated food hall vibes. This is a place where people actually shop. It’s part of the charm, but also means it can feel a bit raw and busy, especially in the morning.

Bring cash, just in case
Some stalls take cards, but not all. It’s easier if you have a bit of cash on you, especially for smaller purchases.

Combine it with the rest of Setúbal
The market only takes a couple of hours to visit properly, so pair it with lunch by the water, a walk around town, or even a short drive out toward the coast.

Welcome to my blog about Lisbon, where good food, reasonable prices, and the Atlantic all play their part in making the city so appealing. The food is a big part of it. Seafood shows up everywhere, from clams in garlic to grilled sardines and the many traditional bacalhau dishes. It’s straightforward cooking, built on good ingredients, and you don’t have to look far to find a place that does it well.Lisbon also makes it easy to see more of Portugal. Beaches, wine regions, and towns like Sintra are all close by, so it’s simple to add a few day trips without much planning.
