Tops Diner is an iconic diner located in East Newark, New Jersey. They’ve been around since 1942 and through the years, they’ve established themselves as one of the best diners in the country. They’re particularly famous for their Disco Fries, – a mountain of fries smothered in rich brown gravy and topped with melted mozzarella cheese. It’s a bit like Canadian poutine, but with mozzarella instead of cheese curds, and it’s delicious.
The Disco Fries are in the appetizer section of the menu, but I’m warning you. If you’re getting the fries as an appetizer you might not be able to eat your main, or any other meal for the rest of the week, because the portion is huge.
We also had the French Dip with rib-eye, aged provolone, caramelized onions, and creamy horseradish sauce in a French baguette with jus on the side to dip it in. It was really, really good! In fact, I think I liked it a tiny bit more than the Disco Fries, and if you visit Tops, the French Dip is definitely something you should order too.
We stopped by Tops on our way to Philadelphia. It was a rainy weeknight so I was surprised to see how many people had found their way to Tops, but after trying the food, I’m not so surprised anymore. It was delicious, and well worth the drive.
