After a busy morning in the city, I wanted to treat myself to something tasty, so when I saw the big “Oyster Bar” sign outside Grey Lady, I was easily lured inside. It was just after 3pm and I was the only guest in the restaurant. The staff told me that their $1 oyster happy hour started at 4pm, but I didn’t want to wait an hour for my oysters, so I ordered half a dozen of the oysters of today without looking at the price tag. Though I don’t think I paid more than 2-3USD per oyster, so even without the happy hour price, it was still very reasonable.
Grey Lady seemed like a really nice place, so I had to ask the staff if the restaurant was always that empty. They could assure me that it wasn’t the case. The Happy Hour was very popular, they told me, and after dinner, Grey Lady would turn into a nightlife spot, complete with a line outside and all.
The decor at Grey Lady was really stylish in a very New England way. You could almost smell the salty sea air, and my oysters also tasted like they had just been pulled out of the water. I finished them in less than a split second, and for a moment, I was thinking about waiting in Happy Hour and order a dozen or two more, but I promised myself to go back another day with some friends instead. I only managed to quickly skim the full menu, but it looked brief and inviting, and I’m sure Grey Lady would be a perfect place to spend a warm summer evening in New York City.
