Casa Birria is a food truck usually parked on 86th street on the Upper East Side. I had spotted the truck, when I was on my way back from a meditation class in the area but I thought birria tacos would be a bit too heavy as post-meditation food. Plus, I had just had lunch, so I decided to return another day.
Though I couldn’t get that food truck out of my head, so a few hours later, I was back, ready for some birria tacos. There was a bit of a line when I got there, but it moved quickly, and it soon became my turn to order Birria Tacos and consomé.
My first taste of birria tacos was at Chofi in Union City with my Mexican foodie friend, Ale. They were so delicious that most other birria taco places I’ve tried since then, pale in comparison.
But I must say, Casa Birria really holds up, even against Chofi standards. I especially liked their consomé, which is the broth that you dip your birria tacos in. The prices at Casa Birria were quite reasonable too (3 tacos for $12 and a large bowl of consomé for $4.75) when I was there (August 2023). Both the consomé and birria tacos were of a generous size, and the tacos had plenty of filling. I ordered 3 tacos and 1 consomé, and was more than enough for a late second lunch and dinner for me.
