We wanted to get the most out of our last day with a rental car, so for dinner, we drove down to La Lajita, which is a small village on the other side of the island. We found a cozy little restaurant, Restaurante Ramón, right by the beach, and sat down for dinner. Both the restaurant and the village seemed a lot less touristy than most of the other places we have been to, and food was simple, but delicious.
I have become quite a papas arrugadas addict down here. The small, slightly wrinkled potatoes, are served with mojo rojo (a red sauce with chili and lots of garlic) and if it weren’t because the restaurants would disapprove of me, taking up a table and only ordering potatoes, I would be absolutely fine, eating papas arrugadas and nothing else for lunch and dinner. I don’t know if it is the volcano soil down here that does it, but the potatoes at the island are really outstanding, and some of the best potatoes I’ve ever had.
My seafood soup was packed with all sorts of tasty stuff from the sea, including mussels, fish, and a tiny squid, which all tasted as if it had been pulled right out of the sea. Sister T mentioned that the prawns in her gambas al ajillo (prawns in garlic oil) also tasted really fresh, so if you go, make sure that you order seafood.
