Years ago, when I was staying at Praety Homestay just down the road, I discovered Warung Bu Ade. I stopped by for lunch one day and ended up coming back almost every day after that.
Over time, I got to know Bu Ade, and one morning she invited me to come by at 4am and cook with her before the warung opened. I spent the morning helping prepare the food for the day in the tiny kitchen out back and went home with several recipes that later ended up on my blog.
Ever since then, Warung Bu Ade has been one of the places I always visit when Iām in Ubud.
I stopped by again the other day and was happy to find that the food is exactly as good as I remember.
This was also Steveās first visit. Heās heard me talk about Warung Bu Ade for years, so he was curious to finally see the place for himself. He loved it. The food, the atmosphere, and the family behind the warung made just as much of an impression on him as they did on me all those years ago.
A few things have changed since my last visit. The family has expanded the property and opened a small grill restaurant next door called The Grill Nusantara. Upstairs, thereās now a shared terrace where you can sit and eat overlooking the neighborhood. Itās a lovely spot for lunch.
What hasnāt changed is the food.
As far as I know, Bu Ade only serves one thing: Nasi Campur Bali.
You can choose between a vegetarian version and one with chicken, but thatās pretty much it. The plate arrives with rice and a selection of dishes that Bu Ade has been up since four in the morning preparing.
One of the things I love most about eating here is Bu Ade herself. If you order the chicken version, sheāll often stand behind the counter looking for the best piece left before serving your plate. Itās a small detail, but it says a lot about the kind of place this is.
The warung opens early and stays open until everything is sold out, which often happens sometime in the afternoon. Mornings are usually the busiest, with locals stopping by to pick up takeaway on their way to work.
Iāve eaten Nasi Campur all over Bali, but this is still the one I compare all the others to.
If youāre in Ubud, make time for a meal at Warung Bu Ade.
