Ubud: Breakfast at Black Garlic at Adiwana Alas Harum

Breakfast at Adiwana Alas Harum is served at Black Garlic, the hotel’s breakfast restaurant, and it quickly became one of my favorite parts of the day. The restaurant is partly open air, and if you grab one of the tables along the edge, you’ll have uninterrupted views across the lush green hillside and the valley below.

Breakfast is served à la carte and is included for hotel guests, but Black Garlic is also open to outside visitors. That’s worth knowing if you’re staying nearby, because the breakfast is really good.

I love hotels that serve breakfast à la carte. It feels much more special than a buffet, and you can taste the difference when everything is cooked to order instead of sitting under heat lamps. The menu at Black Garlic is large enough that you could easily eat breakfast here every morning without running out of new dishes to try.

There are several different coffee options. Steve and I mostly ordered lattes, either iced or hot, and the coffee was excellent, easily on par with what you’d get at a good café. There was also a nice selection of fresh juices. Steve worked his way through most of the menu, while I kept coming back to the watermelon juice, which was cold, sweet, and incredibly refreshing.

Not long after you’re seated, a basket of warm croissants arrives with butter and homemade melon jam. A plate of fresh fruit is also served while you wait for your breakfast, which is a lovely touch.

One of the lighter dishes was the Mango Symphony Smoothie, a mango and banana smoothie topped with granola, chia seeds, and fresh strawberries. It was simple but good, and a nice choice on mornings when I wanted something lighter.

The Eggs Benedict with smoked salmon was much more substantial. Perfectly poached eggs were served with asparagus, crispy potato rösti, and a rich hollandaise sauce. The rösti worked surprisingly well instead of the traditional English muffin, and the dish was very filling.

One morning I was in the mood for something sweet, so I ordered the Oreo Pancakes. Two thick, fluffy pancakes came topped with Oreo ice cream, caramelized banana, and cashew crumble. It was definitely more dessert than breakfast, but if you have a sweet tooth, you’ll probably love it.

Our favorite, though, was the Ham & Cheese Toastie. It was made with excellent sourdough bread and filled with melted cheese, ham, egg, aioli, and just a hint of spices. It was one of those dishes that sounds fairly simple on paper but ended up being the one we kept talking about afterwards.

If you’re staying at Adiwana Alas Harum, breakfast at Black Garlic is something to look forward to every morning. The hotel is located a couple of minutes’ walk from the northern entrance to Campuhan Ridge Walk, so if you’re out for an early morning walk, Black Garlic is also a great place to stop for breakfast, even if you’re not staying at the hotel. Great food, excellent coffee, and beautiful views make it well worth the detour.

Mitzie Mee - Sanne

Bali has a way of getting under your skin in the best possible way. One moment you’re lounging on a sun-drenched beach with a coconut in hand, and the next you’re surrounded by jungle and incense in Ubud, wondering if you should just stay forever (I’ve considered it more than once). This blog is a mix of both: beach life and rice fields, poolside breakfasts and warung lunches, trendy restaurants and hidden little spots I stumbled upon by accident. I’ll tell you where I’ve been staying, what I’ve been eating, and the places I’d go back to in a heartbeat. If you’re planning a trip, or just in the mood for a little wanderlust, here’s my Bali, one bite, one beach, one Bintang at a time.
