How to make the perfect smoothie bowl

How to make the perfect smoothie bowl

I’m a big fan of smoothie bowls! They are vibrant and colorful, and the array of toppings make sure your breakfast isn’t only tasty, but also a feast for the eyes.

In the early days, I started out with some rather miserable attempts, that looked more like berry soup, and finding the right balance between too much liquid, and not enough liquid to get my budget brand blender to blend, was a struggle. I therefore thought I would share some of the smoothie bowl tips that I’ve picked up along the way.

Pick the right base

I quickly found out that the key to smoothie bowl success was sliced, frozen bananas, which gives the smoothie some texture without clogging up the blender. I use one frozen banana per bowl together with frozen açai mix for when I want a purple bowl, or pitaya mix for when I’m in the mood for pink.

Other good bases include frozen mangoes, melon and berries, and it’s important that the ingredients are frozen, or you might end up with smoothie soup.

I sometimes mix in a few tea spoons of Greek yogurt, which further adds to the creaminess of the bowl, and gives a more filling breakfast.

You’ll also need to add a bit of liquid to get the blending started. Depending on the other ingredients, I usually add a little bit of coconut water, pineapple juice or orange juice, but once again, be careful with the liquid as it’s hard to get the texture right if you’ve firt made the smoothie too runny.

Toppings

This is where you can get creative. Common toppings include sliced fruits, berries, granola, coconut flakes, chia seeds, nuts, and a drizzle of honey or maple syrup. Fresh figs, cocoa nibs, lychee , cherries and edible flowers are other options, but you can use any kind of tasty topping that make the bowl look pretty. Figure out your topping before you start making the smoothie, so you’re done with the decoration and the bowl is ready to eat shortly after the blending is done, so the smoothie keeps it’s nice, slightly frozen texture.

If you ask me, smoothie bowls are not just a trend; they are a delicious, nutritious, and versatile breakfast option that caters to a variety of tastes and dietary needs. They are relatively quick and easy to prepare, making them a convenient option for busy mornings or as a speedy snack. For those with a sweet tooth, smoothie bowls can also be a healthier alternative to traditional desserts. Made with natural fruit sugars and nutrient-rich toppings, they satisfy sweet cravings in a more health-conscious way.

I like that you don’t have to fuss around with settings to get good food out of it. Vegetables turn out crisp without drying out, and chicken comes out juicy with a nice golden crust. It’s one of those kitchen gadgets that actually lives up to the hype and ends up being used all the time.

Caraway Nonstick Ceramic Frying Pan (2.7 qt, 10.5")
$115.00

Caraway recently launched on Amazon, and their cookware is as pretty as it is practical. The Caraway 10.5" Nonstick Ceramic Frying Pan is one of those pieces you’ll find yourself reaching for all the time, whether it’s for eggs, sautéed veggies, or pancakes on the weekend. I especially love it in Perracotta, which adds such a nice pop of color in the kitchen.

The naturally non-stick surface means you can cook with less oil or butter, and cleanup is quick with just a wipe or light wash. Like all of Caraway’s cookware, the pan is free from PTFE, PFOA, PFAS, lead, and cadmium, so you don’t have to worry about toxins sneaking into your food.

It works on all stovetops, gas, electric, and induction, and it’s oven-safe up to 550ºF, which makes it super versatile. Durable, easy to use, and so good-looking, this is a pan that really makes everyday cooking feel a little more special.
