NYC: Russ & Daughters – Lox and Cream Cheese

Russ & Daughters New York

Russ & Daughters is one of my favorite bagel places in New York City, so for lunch today I went for some bagel and salmon therapy. There’s no seating inside the shop, so you get the bagels to go and find a bench along the street outside.

On Orchard Street, there’s a Russ & Daughters café, which looks very neat and nice. The food there is also supposed to be good, but I still prefer the shop on Houston. Visiting the shop, which is more than 100 years old, is an experience in itself.

Just like Katz’s Delicatessen (read my blog post about the legendary Pastrami Sandwich at Katz’s) a few steps further down Houston Street, is famous for pastrami, Russ & Daughters are famous for smoked fish, and their selection of salmon is top notch. I first considered getting the Generational, which is a bagel (or a bialy) with smoked salmon and sturgeon, but I changed my mind and went for a classic Nova lox and cream cheese on a plain bagel. I’ve tried The Generational before, and it’s great, but the salmon is also amazing and always a safe bet.
