NYC: Little Island – A riverside oasis in the city

NYC: Little Island - A riverside oasis in the city

Little Island opened in May 2021, but this stylish new green spot has somehow managed to stay under my radar, so it wasn’t until this summer, when my friend Oluva suggested that we went after our brunch at Clinton Street Baking Co., that I finally went to see what it was all about.

The manmade island is supported by 132 tulip-shaped structures, and looks like something from a sci-fi fairytale. It’s a great spot for a leisurely stroll through the winding pathways, with several vantage points from where you can enjoy some really beautiful views of both the NY and the NJ side of Hudson River.

While Little Island might be an urban playground, it feels like a lush escape, and it’s perfect for those in need for a short break from the hustle and bustle. We went around noon on a very hot day, but I would suggest that you go in the afternoon or early evening instead, to catch the golden hour lighting that makes the views even more beautiful, and to soak up the stunning sunset over the water.

It doesn’t take long to cover the pathways around the island, but if the weather is nice you can bring a picnic basket, a date, or simply unwind with a book and savor some downtime in the heart of the Big Apple.

For those seeking a cultural fix, Little Island hosts live performances and events on a regular basis, so be sure to check their calendar.
