Belga is a Belgian rooftop bar and brasserie located on the 32nd floor at Sofitel Bangkok Sukhumvit. It’s a great place for beer and moules frites, combining a fairly causal vibe with the underplayed luxury that characterizes most of the Sofitels I’ve been to. After a day around the city, there’s nothing better than taking the elevator up in the air and escape the hustle and bustle for a couple of hours.
I’m not sure whether there’s a dress code at Belga, but now when I think about it, I recall that most guys wear collared shirts, and most girls wear dresses, but overall, the vibe feels more laid back than at most other rooftop bars in this part of the city.
The selection of beer is so extensive it will make your head spin, but if in doubt, I suggest you try a Duvel. It’s a really good beer that goes excellent with Moules Frites. Another option could be one of the fruity beers such as Lindemans Kriek, which is a cherry beer, with a light and fruity flavor, perfect for the warm weather in Bangkok.
Furthermore, the food is really good, and I’d dare to say that this might be the very best spot for moules frites in Bangkok. There are several different kinds of moules frites on the menu. I’ve only tried the traditional one with white wine, but I’m curious about the tom yum moules frites. If you try that one, let me know how it was:) I’ve also heard that the waffles are good, but I’ve never managed to conquer more than my mussels main course.
Try to get one of the tables outside, and make sure you book a table in advance. Belga is popular among the expat crowd, and even on weekdays the place is often full, especially if you’re looking for outdoor seating.
The price level is reasonable, compared to what a similar dinner at a similar location would cost in Denmark or the US. Not outrageously expensive, but pricey enough to keep the sleazy crowd from nearby Soi Cowboy away.
