At the end of my last trip to Bangkok, I stayed for a couple of days at a hotel near Don Mueang Airport. Each day, I took the SRT train into the city and changed to the SkyTrain at Bang Sue Station. Bang Sue is located in Chatuchak District and is one of Bangkok’s key transportation hubs. It connects different parts of the city and the rest of Thailand, serving as a major interchange for the Northern, Northeastern, and Southern railway lines. Both local commuter trains and long distance trains pass through here, and there is always a steady flow of people coming and going.
Taxis are cheap in Bangkok, but I really grew to like riding the commuter train. It was often crowded and almost always slow, but it offered a small window into everyday life in the city. Sometimes the train I was on would continue all the way north or south, packed with passengers and luggage stacked wherever there was room.
I never fully understood the ticketing system or the different travel classes. The timetable was also a bit of a mystery to me, so I often ended up waiting longer than expected for the evening train back to my hotel. During those waits, I would wander over to the food stalls set up just off the railroad tracks and order dinner.
The dish in the video below was my final meal before heading to the airport. A stir fry with chicken, garlic, and vegetables. There was a hint of chili, but not quite enough for my taste, so I added a spoonful of chili condiment to get the heat just right. Sitting on a slightly unstable plastic chair, eating a simple but delicious meal while watching the busy scene around the station, felt like the perfect way to round off my Bangkok trip.
