On my last trip to Bangkok, I stayed at a hotel near Don Mueang Airport. Each day, I would take the SRT (State Railway of Thailand) train to the city, switching to the SkyTrain at Bang Sue Station.
Bang Sue is located in Bangkok’s Chatuchak District, and it’s is a crucial transportation hub connecting various parts of the city and Thailand. It serves as a major interchange for the State Railway of Thailand’s Northern, Northeastern, and Southern Lines, facilitating both local and long-distance travel.
Taxis are cheap in Bangkok, but I really came to like riding the commuter train, which was often crowded, and very slow, offering a fun glimpse into the everyday life of the commuting crowds in Bangkok. Sometimes, the train I would take would continue to cities further up north or down south in Thailand, and be packed passenger and baggage.
I never truly understood the ticketing system and the different travel classes. Understanding the timetable was also quite a challenge for me, so I often found myself waiting quite a while for the train to take me back to my hotel in the evening. During these waits, I would visit the food stalls just off the railroad tracks and enjoy a delicious meal.
The dish in the video below was my final meal before my flight out. It’s a stir-fry with chicken, garlic, and vegetables, and there was a hint of chili, but it wasn’t too spicy, so I added a bit of the chili condiment to get it just right. Sitting on a ramshackle plastic chair, enjoying a tasty meal, while watching the busy scenery at the railroad station, this was the perfect way to round off my Bangkok trip.
