Bangkok: Riva Arun – A boutique hotel by the river

Riva Arun, boutique hotel in Bangkok

Bangkok can be loud, hot, and relentlessly energetic. That is part of the appeal. But after a day of traffic, temples, and sunbaked sidewalks, it is a luxury to return to somewhere that feels calm. Riva Arun is that kind of place.

Set directly on the banks of the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok’s old town, Riva Arun feels like a quiet pause in the middle of the city. Boats glide by, temple bells echo in the distance, and just across the water, Wat Arun rises like a postcard come to life. It is hard to believe you are still in one of Southeast Asia’s busiest capitals.

I had previously stayed at the sister property, Riva Surya, which remains one of my favorite hotels in Bangkok, so I arrived at Riva Arun with high expectations. The hotel opened in 2016 and quickly gained a following, particularly among American and European travelers looking for something more intimate and less resort driven. I am happy to report that it lives up to its reputation.

The design is clean and airy, with thoughtful details throughout. The 250 thread count bed linens felt wonderfully crisp, and yes, it genuinely felt like sleeping on a cloud. The white marble bathroom was sleek and spacious, and I was quietly grateful to find a toothbrush among the complimentary amenities, as I had once again forgotten my own.

Each day, two complimentary bottles of water were placed in the room, the minibar was well stocked, and in the afternoon a small fruit plate would be waiting when I returned from exploring. These are small gestures, but they make a difference.

My room faced the river, and the view was one of the highlights of my stay. Waking up to the Chao Phraya outside my window, with Wat Arun on the opposite bank, felt special every single morning. It quickly became a ritual to draw back the curtains and take in the scene before heading out.

Despite being in the heart of the historic district, the hotel feels surprisingly tucked away. The neighborhood retains a lived in, local character, yet in recent years small boutique hotels, cozy cafés, and stylish bars have appeared along the river, giving the area new energy without stripping it of its soul.

One of the hotel’s greatest assets is its rooftop restaurant and bar, Above Riva. There are few better places in Bangkok to watch the sun set. With a cocktail in hand and the river below, you can see Wat Arun gradually illuminate as dusk settles in. It is a view that rivals some of the city’s flashier sky bars, but with a far more intimate atmosphere.

The location is also exceptionally convenient. Wat Pho and the Grand Palace are just a short walk away, and Pak Khlong Talat, Bangkok’s famous Flower Market, is nearby as well. Chinatown is about a mile away. You can walk, but it is often easier and more enjoyable to hop on one of the small river ferries. Sanam Chai MRT station is within walking distance, and for longer trips across the city, Grab worked perfectly for me.

Riva Arun is well suited for couples, solo travelers, or anyone who wants to stay central and close to Bangkok’s most important sights while still having somewhere peaceful to retreat at the end of the day. It is not a massive property with hundreds of rooms. Instead, it is a smaller boutique hotel with personality, a spectacular riverside setting, and a location that is difficult to beat.
