Bangkok: Hyde & Seek – Gastropub

Hyde & Seek, Bangkok

Even before I went to Bangkok, I was curious about Hyde & Seek, which is something as promising as a gastrobar with a fun-dining philosophy. It definitely sounded like a place for me, so Friday night I went over to see just how fun a gastrobar could be.

Outside at the vibrant terrace they had reserved a nice little table for me in the middle of all the action, and even though I came an hour early, I got seated right away, and within 5 minutes I had a glass of prosecco, a breadbasket and the menu in front of me.

You got to love a place that calls their dishes “Holy Macaroni Gratin,” “Oh, confused chicken” and “Lamb is life.” I went for a “Surf and Turf” which was braised Wagyu cheeks with scallop ravioli. Does it sound delicious? It really was, and I licked my plate carefully before continuing with a flourless chocolate cake for dessert, which also turned out to be a really nice experience.

Hyde & Seek is a fun place with a great atmosphere where even solo-diners like me can have a really good time. The only thing I regret is that I didn’t try one of their cocktails, which should be something really extraordinary, but I’ll do that next time, since there’s no doubt that I’ll be back.

The worldwide gastropub wave has not left Bangkok unaffected, and one of the more successful spots is Hyde & Seek. Hyde & Seek is more gastro than pub, and even though you will find bangers and mash on the menu, it is the more sophisticated items such as diver scallop crudo and chili-crusted calamari that makes Hyde & Seek stand out from the crowd.

You can choose to sit inside, but the tables on the outdoor terrace is where you really want to be, so remember to make a reservation well in advance. In the weekends, Hyde & Seek is a very popular brunch spot. The crowd is a trendy mix of young expats and affluent Thais and most people dress up a bit, so leave your  “I love Pattaya” T-shirt at home.

• Hyde & Seek can be a bit tricky to find, but most taxi drivers know Athenee Residence. If you take the metro, use my map below. It’s only a short walk from Ploen Chit Station.

On this blog I share the restaurants I keep returning to, the street food stalls that never disappoint, and the neighborhoods where I always end up wandering for hours. You will also find tips for first timers, hotel recommendations, and the little discoveries that make each trip feel new again.Whether you are planning your first visit or you already know the city well, I hope you find something here that inspires your next Bangkok moment.
