Cambodian Rice Porridge with Chicken

Cambodian Rice Porridge with Chicken

Cambodian rice porridge, borbor (បបរ), is a traditional and comforting dish that’s popular across Cambodia. It’s similar to congee in other Asian cuisines although I’ve found that most versions I’ve had in Cambodia have been more like a soup that a porridge. You can have the porridge for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, or even as a remedy for when someone is feeling unwell. The porridge is usually served with a range of garnishes and condiments such as cilantro, lime, chili, and fried garlic.

Here’s a video from Meas Family Homestay in Takeo. One of the highlights when staying at Meas Family Homestay is the family style dinner, when everybody gathers at the common tables and enjoy the meal together. In the video, Linda has made Cambodian rice porridge with chicken for dinner. The chicken came straight from their own farm, and Linda mentions she had to call The Chicken Killer–a lady from the village they rely on when it’s time to slaughter a chicken:)
