Denmark: My guide to the waterfront in Vejle – A great place to stay

My Guide to a Perfect Weekend in Vejle: Where to Eat, Where to Stay, and Things to Do

Vejle’s waterfront district has a very modern Nordic vibe to it. Beautiful architecture, a relaxed atmosphere, and in many ways the very essence of modern Scandi living. It’s a relatively new area, with striking buildings right on the water, some really good restaurants, and a hotel with views that are hard to beat. If you’re planning a weekend in Vejle, this is a great place to base yourself. Here is my guide.

Vejle’s waterfront district has quietly become one of the most interesting parts of the city. It’s a new area, still finding its feet in some ways, but what’s already there is genuinely impressive. Striking architecture right on the water, a really good restaurant, and a hotel with views that are hard to beat. If you’re planning a weekend in Vejle, this is a great place to base yourself. Here is my guide to the neighborhood:

Bølgen

Bølgen is hard to miss. Henning Larsen’s wave-shaped residential complex runs along the waterfront in five long curves of glass and steel. The area in front of it is open and well laid out, good for a walk along the water. We were there in early spring when it was still cold and grey, and it was already a lovely spot. I imagine it is even better in summer.

Fjordenhus

Fjordenhus is the real showstopper. Four intersecting cylinders of custom brick rising straight out of the water, designed by Olafur Eliasson and inaugurated in 2018. The ground floor is usually open to the public and free to visit, with artworks built into the spaces and the fjord visible below, but it was closed when we visited, so that will have to wait for next time. Though even from the outside it is one of the most striking modern buildings I have seen in Denmark.

Restaurants

Restaurant Remouladen is the obvious choice for dinner on the waterfront. It sits on the upper floor of the marina building with a terrace overlooking the boats and the water, and the menu has an ambitious modern Nordic focus. Stylish but unpretentious. For something more casual, Enzo & C is right in the hotel building and does solid Italian with a strong reputation for pizza. They also do takeaway, which is a great option if you are staying at the Sheraton next door.

Where to Stay: Four Points Flex by Sheraton

Four Points Flex by Sheraton is right on the waterfront and the natural place to stay if you want to be in the middle of it all. It is part of Marriott Bonvoy, so worth keeping in mind if you collect points. The rooms are clean and quiet, and the views from the higher floors are really good: the fjord, Vejlefjordbroen in the distance, and Fjordenhus right below. Breakfast is on the 11th floor with panoramic views, and there is a rooftop terrace. Good hotel, great location.

Mitzie Mee - Sanne

Welcome to my blog about The Heart of Jutland. I grew up in a small village just outside Fredericia, so this part of Denmark has always had a special place in my heart. Even after many years of traveling around the world, this is still where I feel at home. Fredericia is the city where I spent most of my childhood, and it is also the place I think of as home when people ask where I’m from. Later in life I worked at the hospital in nearby Kolding, and for several years I flew out of Billund Airport as cabin crew. Through work, family, and everyday life, I have therefore spent a lot of time in this area and had plenty of opportunities to explore the towns, the countryside, and the coastline. There is truly a lot to experience here. Historic towns, beautiful nature, great restaurants, and plenty of things to see and do. It is also one of the easiest parts of Denmark to visit, whether you are flying into Billund or traveling through Jutland. Here on the blog I share my favorites from the Heart of Jutland. The restaurants I keep coming back to, cafés that are worth a stop, and the places and experiences I would recommend if you want to discover some of the best that the Heart of Jutland has to offer.
