Denmark: My Guide to Billund Airport

Denmark: My Guide to Billund Airport

I always look forward to flying out of Billund Airport. Over the years, I’ve spent a lot of time here, both as a passenger and through my previous work as cabin crew and a pilot, and it’s a really well-run airport where everything just works.

One of the first things you notice is how easy it is to get around. The terminal is compact and intuitive, so you don’t waste time looking for gates or security. Security is usually quick, and the staff are both efficient and friendly. There’s almost always a smile and a “good morning” or “have a great trip,” which makes a big difference, especially for those super early mornings where most of us wish we were still in bed.

It’s a small airport, but the design feels open and welcoming. The light wooden floors in the departure hall give the space a warm, Nordic feel and do wonders for the acoustics.

King Amlet Lounge

If you have access, the King Amlet Lounge is definitely worth a visit. It’s spacious, with large windows overlooking the apron, so you can sit and watch the planes come and go. The breakfast is excellent, and honestly one of my favorite lounge breakfasts anywhere. Later in the day, the food is more in line with what you’d expect from a typical lounge.

For a morning flight, it’s worth paying for access if you don’t already have it through a credit card or similar programs. Later in the day, heading out to one of the airport restaurants instead might be a better option.

Shopping

The duty-free store has the usual airport lineup, and the shopping selection isn’t huge, but it covers the essentials. Though if you ask me, the most interesting part is the gourmet section. You’ll find everything from chocolate-covered licorice to craft gummies, Danish crisp bread, and other Scandinavian specialties. Perfect if you need a last-minute gift or something to munch on for your flight.

And then there’s Lagkagehuset. I almost always bring a loaf of Danish rye bread when I leave Billund. Their chia rye bread is really good and stays fresh for a long time.

Getting to and from Billund Airport

Transportation is where things get a bit less smooth. Unless you have someone to drive you, it can be a bit of a hassle, especially at off hours.

There are buses to Vejle several times an hour during the day, and the trip takes around 30 minutes. It works well if you’re traveling midday and coming from Vejle. The issue is early morning flights. If you have a 6am departure, there’s usually no bus that gets you there in time, so you’re left with a taxi or Uber, which can get expensive.

It’s worth keeping in mind when booking your flight. Sometimes choosing a later departure just makes more sense. Alternatively, you can stay near the airport. Airport Hotel Billund is right next to the terminal and the most convenient option, but there are also other hotels and Airbnbs in the area.

All in all, Billund Airport is a really great place to start a trip. It’s not the biggest airport, but it has everything you need, and the whole experience just feels easy and hyggelig.

Mitzie Mee - Sanne

Welcome to my travel blog. This is where I share the places I go, the food I eat, and everything in between. I write about the experiences that stay with me long after I’ve unpacked: a view that stops you in your tracks, a local market tucked away on a side street, or just a really good coffee in a new city. Thanks for being here, let’s see where this goes.
