While I was waiting for Tina to arrive in Las Vegas, I took myself out to dinner at Best Friend at Park MGM. I sat down at the bar, ordered a glass of frosé, and started chatting with the bartenders, who were great at making me feel like I had been coming there for years.
Best Friend is Roy Choi’s restaurant, and if his name rings a bell, it is because he helped kick off the Los Angeles food truck movement with Kogi BBQ, the food truck that made Korean Mexican fusion a national obsession.
Getting into the restaurant is part of the fun. You walk through a room designed to look like a corner store, shelves stacked with snacks and sodas, before the space opens up into the dining room. Inside the restaurant, the lighting is low, the walls are covered in street art, and the music is turned up just enough to remind you that you are in Vegas.
The menu is divided into sections with names like Bowls, Banchan and Snacks, and Vegas Sh*t. Under L.A. Sh•t you will find the famous Kogi Short Rib Tacos. Tender Korean short ribs tucked into Mexican style tortillas, layered with bright, punchy flavors. Easily the best tacos I have had in a long time. I also ordered the Street Corn, which were also delicious, generously topped with cotija, Tajín, and a squeeze of lime. Messy in the best possible way.
The food is really good, and Best Friend feels like party on a Saturday night, so even though it was just me, myself & I, and even though it wasn’t Saturday, I had a great time at my seat in the bar, chatting along with the bartenders, and drinking frosé. Don’t miss the Kogi Tacos!
