Located right in the middle of the epicenter of Bangkok’s nightlife, Sukhumvit Soi 11, Oskar is the perfect place to start a night out. This laid-back, yet classy bistro/bar has won the hearts of the expats in Bangkok with simple, yet tempting food and reasonably priced drinks. In the weekends, there’s a DJ and the feel of the place is more club than pub.
Oskar is busiest around dinnertime and until midnight. After midnight, most people move on to the nearby clubs. One of Bangkok’s most popular clubs, Levels, is right across the street, and further down the road, you’ll find other hotspots such as Above Eleven, Nest and Q-Bar.
Most of the patrons are male expats and local women, but even though Oskar and Soi 11 aren’t too far away from Nana Plaza, which is probably the sleaziest place in Bangkok, there’s a world of difference between the men you see sniffing around Nana Plaza, and the men at the bars and clubs down Soi 11. Though one thing I always wonder is where all the expat girls go out.
The outside porch is almost always full, but the seating inside is also nice and closer to the busy bar area. The cocktails are good and not too expensive and there’s even a good selection of wine by the glass. Oskar also serves food, and the pizzas are among the best in this part of town.
• As most people continue the evening on one of the nearby clubs, they are dressed accordingly, so even though there’s no dress code, smart casual is the way to go.
• The nearest BTS station is Nana, but Oskar is quite a walk down Sukhumvit Soi 11, so take a taxi and save your heel-mileage.
