Bangkok: Sampeng Lane – My Guide to Shopping in Chinatown

Sampeng Lane, shopping in Chinatown, Bangkok

If you love the thrill of finding something for next to nothing and you do not mind a little chaos, Sampeng is your kind of place. This is where Bangkok’s small business owners stock up, and it is also where you can score some of the best bargains in the city, as long as you know what you are walking into. It is not pretty or polished. It is crowded, hot, and intense, but if you can handle that, you will find some of Bangkok’s cheapest shopping right here.

Sampeng Lane Market, or just Sampeng, is one of the best places in Bangkok to shop for accessories, little trinkets, and the kind of stuff you did not know you needed until you saw it. Despite the name, Sampeng is not really a lane. The heart of it runs along Soi Wanit 1 in Bangkok’s Chinatown.

Even though Sampeng has become more popular with tourists in recent years, it is still mainly a wholesale market for smaller shop owners. I have lost count of how many times I have spotted the exact same items in little shops elsewhere in Bangkok, marked up to double the price or more.

As the day goes on, Sampeng gets packed. The covered walkway is narrow, and vendors are constantly pushing carts loaded with goods through the crowd. Keep an eye on your stuff and do not make it easy for pickpockets.

It also gets seriously hot and humid inside, especially when it is busy. Luckily, there are small stalls along the way selling cold soda and fresh juice, which feels like a public service in the middle of all that shopping.

How it works

Because this is a wholesale market, many shops require you to buy a minimum number of items.

Shoes often come with a minimum of six pairs, and some shops will not let you mix sizes or designs. That can make it tricky unless you are traveling with five friends who share both taste and shoe size.

Trying on clothes is usually not a thing here, and many vendors do not want you opening sealed packaging. Bring a measuring tape and write down your measurements before you go, so you have a better idea of what will fit.

In jewelry shops, the minimum is often ten pieces, but you can usually mix styles freely. If you buy fewer than ten, you may be charged a higher price per piece.

You can find earrings for as little as 10 THB, and things like office supplies, socks, and hair clips are also very cheap. Most shops work with fixed prices, so do not expect a discount unless you are buying in bulk.

Cash is still the safest option, especially for smaller stalls. Some of the larger shops accept cards for bigger purchases, and you will also see Thai QR payments in use. As a visitor, though, cash is usually what works best.

How to get there

Boat option: It is still a lovely Bangkok thing to do, taking a Chao Phraya river boat and getting off at Ratchawong Pier. From there it is a short walk along Ratchawong Road until you reach Soi Wanit 1.

MRT option: These days, the easiest way to get to Sampeng from central Bangkok is the MRT. The Blue Line stops at Wat Mangkon station in the middle of Chinatown, and from there it is only a few minutes on foot to Sampeng. This is the most convenient option, especially when traffic is heavy.

There is no Skytrain line that goes directly into Chinatown.

Beyond Sampeng

Sampeng is not just Soi Wanit 1. The market spills into the surrounding streets and covers much of the area between Yaowarat Road, Chinatown’s main drag, and Soi Wanit 1.

Give yourself plenty of time to shop without rushing, and when you are done, stay in the neighborhood. Chinatown is one of the best places in Bangkok to eat, and it would be a shame not to follow up your bargain hunt with noodles, dim sum, or other Chinese favorites from one of the many small stalls and restaurants nearby.
