Las Vegas: VooDoo Rooftop Bar at Rio

VooDoo Lounge Las Vegas

There are surprisingly few rooftop bars in Las Vegas, so if you’re like me and can’t get enough of cocktails with a view, then VooDoo should not be missed. VooDoo is located on the 51st floor at Rio, so it’s a short drive off the Strip, but the view from the rooftop terrace is amazing and definitely worth the detour.

VooDoo has been around for several years, and nowadays the clientele is mixed crowd of bachelorette parties (Chippendales have a show at Rio), locals (local ladies get in for free) and more mature people who remember VooDoo, from back when the bar was the hottest place in town. If you’re after “young” and “hip”, VooDoo may not be the place for you, but if “fun” and “non-pretentious” will do, then I’m sure you’ll have a great time at VooDoo. The music is mostly hits from the radio mixed with old pop and rock classics (I even think they played Guns N’ Roses one night) so let your hair down and dance like nobody is watching.

The dress code is supposed to be strictly enforced (business casual, i.e. no caps, sports attire etc.) but VooDoo feels a lot more relaxed and down-dressed than most other rooftop bars in the city.

On the website it says that the cover charge is $30 for girls ($20 during weekdays), but if you’re a group of girls, a good promoter will probably be able to get you on the guest list. During weekdays, I’ve never paid to get in and from what I’ve heard, if ladies pay a cover charge, it is usually just $10. There’s also a good chance that you’ll be offered free entrance passes while walking around Rio’s lobby area.

• The drinks are a bit pricey, but they are really good and some of them are hilariously strong. Try the legendary Witch Doctor. It is huge and can easily be shared with a couple of friends.

• There is also a restaurant (VooDoo Steak) on the premises, and if you eat there, you get complimentary entrance to VooDoo Rootop Nightclub.

• VooDoo can be a bit quiet (almost empty) during the week, but on weekends, it’s usually packed.VooDoo is best for: Drinks with a view, 30-somethings, weekends
