And finally loukoumades happened! We had spotted the cozy little stand down by the harbor several days earlier, but every time we walked past, we had just been out for dinner and were way too full. Then finally, one evening, we had room for dessert. Loukoumades are these small fried dough balls. They’re made from a simple yeast dough, and they are crispy on the outside and soft inside. In Greece you eat loukoumades as a dessert or as a sweet snack, and the classic version is typically served drenched in honey, and sprinkled with cinnamon, and sometimes chopped nuts or toasted sesame seeds. It’s one of my favorite Greek desserts, so it was about time we finally had some.
The stand had several different kinds of loukoumades, but we went for the traditional version with honey and cinnamon. The little crispy dough balls were served piping hot in a small foil tray, straight from the fryer, with honey and a sprinkle of cinnamon on top. We ate them on a little bench outside the stand, and they were so good.
The little stand where we had loukoumades is called Honey Balls of Skiathos on Google Maps.
