Off to Skiathos: Danish Charter, Sea Views, and Souvlaki

Skiathos Blog

Steve finally got to experience a proper Danish charter holiday, because earlier this week, we found some cheap Sunclass flights from Copenhagen to Skiathos.

At first, we had only booked the flights. We figured it would be easy enough to find a hotel afterward, but when we started checking Airbnb and the major booking sites, it turned out that almost everything on Skiathos was sold out. We hadn’t expected that at all. There were a few rooms here and there, but surprisingly little to choose from, and what was available was very expensive.

After quite a bit of searching, Steve finally managed to find Cape Kanapitsa, a hotel just outside Skiathos Town.

We flew out of Copenhagen in the afternoon and landed on Skiathos in the evening. Skiathos has a rather unusual airport with a short runway right by the water, and it has become a popular spot for plane spotters. At the end of the runway, you can stand really close as the planes come in to land. When we arrived, there was already quite a crowd gathered to watch the planes. Apparently, it has become a bit of an attraction in itself, and I’m pretty sure we’ll be back for a closer look one of the days.

At the airport, we took a taxi to the hotel. Or rather, we were put into a taxi with other people heading in the same direction. It felt a little strange, but when I think about it, it actually makes sense. So instead of sending several half-empty taxis across the island, they fill the cars with passengers going the same way.

The hotel is cozy and our room is great. So far, we’re very happy with the place.

We were hungry, so after dropping our bags in the room, we headed down to the hotel restaurant Blu for a late dinner. We ordered dakos and souvlaki. Dakos is a traditional Cretan dish made with barley rusk topped with tomato, cheese, and olive oil. Barley rusk is a very dry, twice-baked bread that softens as it soaks up the tomato juices and olive oil, though it still keeps some of its texture. It was fine, but not really for me.

The souvlaki on the other hand was really good. It was a big serving of delicious grilled pork with pita and fries, so delicious.

Then later that evening, there was one more surprise. Steve had ordered flowers from a local florist, so when we got back from the restaurant, there was a beautiful bouquet waiting for me in the room.

Welcome to my travel blog. This is where I share the places I go, the food I eat, and everything in between. I write about the experiences that stay with me long after I’ve unpacked: a view that stops you in your tracks, a local market tucked away on a side street, or just a really good coffee in a new city. Thanks for being here, let’s see where this goes.
