Munich Hofbräuhaus – Beer, Pretzels and fun

From the rooftop bar at Mandarin Oriental, we could see the garden at Hofbräuhaus. It looked so cozy, so even though our plans for the rest of the evening didn’t originally include beer, we quickly changed our minds and decided to go and check it out.

Hofbräuhaus closes at 11:30pm, and we were there at 10:30pm. I think most people go there a little earlier because most of the tables inside were empty. Though outside, in the Biergarten, it was still packed, and nobody looked like they were ready to leave.

After a while, we managed to find two seats at a table with a young couple, drinking each their Maß. A Maß is one of those big mugs of beer that holds a liter, one Maß. I think the girl at our table was on her second round, so Hanna and I also decided to get each our giant beer too. Though one liter is really a lot of beer, so we chickened out last minute, and had one to share, and a Pretzel instead.

Hofbräuhaus is probably the most famous beerhall in Munich. It is owned by the Bavarian government, and the beautiful old building’s location right in the heart of Altstadt makes it an obvious place for your first encounter with Bavarian beer culture. Yes, it’s touristy, but it’s also fun, and well worth a visit.
