Steve and I stopped by Mair’s for lunch after a trip to the golf course, so we were pretty hungry by the time we sat down.
Mair’s is run by Eva Mair, who is from Austria, and the Austrian roots are easy to spot on the menu. Wienerschnitzel is the star of the dinner menu, and for breakfast and lunch, Mair’s is known for, among other things, their brunch board. That was actually what we had our eyes on at first, but then we spotted the madder section on the menu (Danish open-faced sandwiches) and ended up ordering two of those instead.
Steve went for the one with schnitzel, while I had the daily special, which I think was some kind of beef, though I’ve forgotten exactly what it was. It was somewhere between roast beef and pastrami, and it was really good. In fact, we both agreed that mine was the better of the two.
And then there’s the big Mair’s question: How do you actually pronounce the name?
Most people I know, myself included, have always gone with something along the lines of “Mah-irs.” My dad, on the other hand, has been very firm that it’s pronounced the same way you would pronounce Meyers.
I asked one of the staff, and my dad was right.
So now we’ve got that settled too 🙂
