AC and I enjoyed our last days in the Californian sun. We visited most of the beaches in LA and also a couple of the beaches south of the city. Our favorite stretch of sand was Newport Beach, as it is less touristy and thus less crowded than the LA beaches.
Both Santa Monica and Venice Beach attract a lot of visitors, and they’re fun and entertaining places, but if you’re looking to escape the worst hordes of tourists, Newport is a great option.
If you are lucky with the traffic, Newport Beach is only a little more than a 1-hour drive from West Hollywood. I particularly liked the coastline between Santa Ana River and Newport Pier, which is long and pearly white and looks just like a setting for Baywatch. The beach is also popular among surfers, and when we were there, the waves were actually a bit too high for swimming. Though it didn’t matter much to me, as I usually find the Pacific too cold for swimming anyway:)
Costa Mesa and the giant shopping mall South Coast Plaza is only a short drive from Newport Beach, so after a lazy afternoon on the beach, we drove to the mall for some power shopping before returning to LA.
If you visit Newport Beach, you don’t want to miss Balboa Island, – such a pretty place!
Another nice beach a little closer to the center of LA is Manhattan Beach
