Los Angeles: Hollywood Walk of Fame – No star for Jay-Z?

Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles

If you’ve watched Pretty Woman, you will definitely recognize Hollywood Boulevard and the Walk of Fame, as the place where Julia Roberts’ character Vivian, dressed in patent-leather OTK boots runs her “business”. Since Pretty Woman, Hollywood Boulevard has got a much needed face lift and new constructions including the impressive Hollywood & Highland, has helped Hollywood regain some of its original glory.

Last night Trine and I went out for a walk in the area. We wanted to catch a glimpse of the Hollywood sign from Hollywood & Highland, but we came a little too late. The sign isn’t lit at night, so it was too dark to see anything. Instead we went continued down Hollywood Boulevard.

I was looking for Jay-Z’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, but guess what? He doesn’t have a star! Isn’t that ridiculous? If anyone deserves a star, it’s Jay-Z.

At night, an odd mix of tourists, homeless people and superheroes gathers at Hollywood Walk of Fame. We spotted a Ninja Turtle and Batman, while we were there, but I think Spiderman took a day off. Hollywood Boulevard around Grauman’s Chinese Theatre and Hollywood & Highland is always busy and feels very safe, while the less busy part of the boulevard further east can feel a bit gloomy and desolate after dark.

Los Angeles is a city you don’t quite figure out all at once. It unfolds slowly, neighborhood by neighborhood, mile by mile. Vast and sun washed, cinematic and oddly intimate, it’s a place of constant contrast. Morning hikes in the canyons. Long lunches that stretch into late afternoon. Evenings that end by the ocean with salt in your hair and traffic humming somewhere in the distance. What I love most about LA is that it feels less like a single city and more like a collection of distinct worlds stitched together by freeways and palm trees. A strip mall might hide one of the best meals you’ll have all year. A quiet residential street can lead to a view that stops you in your tracks. The glamour is there if you look for it, but so is a relaxed, everyday rhythm that makes the city surprisingly livable. On this page, I’ve gathered my Los Angeles favorites. The restaurants I return to. The neighborhoods I linger in. The places that capture the particular mix of ambition, creativity, and laid back energy that defines the city.
