Copenhagen: Sticks ‘n’ Sushi – An old favorite

Sticks'n'Sushi at Tivoli Hotel, Copenhagen

Trine was in town this weekend, so Friday night, we went for dinner at Sticks ‘n’ Sushi at Tivoli Hotel. We only waited 30 minutes before we got a table, which was almost a shame, because their bar was really nice and we were busy drinking cocktails.

I had a Keroppi, which is a green drink with cucumber, gin and Calpico (or Calpis, as it’s called in Japan). Calpico is a Japanese calcium-enriched soft drink, which I’ve never previously had with alcohol, but which showed great potential as a mixer.

It is no secret that I really like Sticks’n’Sushi. The restaurants (especially the one at Tivoli Hotel) are nice and sleek and with this remarkable cosmopolitan ambience that you only rarely find in Copenhagen.  Their menu is innovative and the food is usually of a quality comparable to topnotch international restaurants.

I love all their small dishes, and their salad wraps with duck and foie gras are so good that they make me homesick, when I’m away from Copenhagen.

We had ordered a menu for two, so we had a little of everything, and even though both Trine and I brought a healthy appetite, we still had to leave a lot of food.

Unfortunately, the nigiri sushi at Sticks ‘n’ Sushi was a bit disappointing. The rice was perfectly cooked, but the rice ball was large and out of shape and the fish wasn’t of such a standard you’d expect from a restaurant in this price bracket. However, the nigiris were only a minor fraction of our dinner that night, and everything else was brilliant.

I must admit that Sticks ‘n’ Sushi’s wardrobe concept doesn’t impress me much. Even though it’s a really good gesture, that the hostess at the entrance offers to take your coat, it all falls flat when you are asked to go look for your coat yourself after dining (you didn’t even get a ticket and anybody could just go and grab a coat).

The service at Sticks ‘n’ Sushi is always impeccable. The employees look like they’re having a good time, and they are well versed in the menu and the ingredients. Even at busy times, they make you feel welcome. Along with the great food, this is one of the reasons that Sticks’n’ Sushi will always have an assigned space in my heart (and in my monthly dining budget).
