La Jolla: Brunch at Cody’s

La Jolla

Along the stretch of coastline between Los Angeles and San Diego, you pass one picturesque small city after another, and most of them are so similar that I wouldn’t be able to tell them apart, if it wasn’t because I had been taking pictures of all the restaurants and the meals we had along the way.

One of the places that really made an impression was La Jolla outside San Diego, and as you’ve probably guessed it wasn’t because of the breathtaking views, the abundant wildlife or the photogenic, pastel-colored houses. Nope. To make it to the top of my list, takes more: It takes Cody’s!

Cody’s is a wonderful café/restaurant/very-cool-hang-out-place, which we stumbled upon on our way back from the beach. It has this je-ne sais-quoi vibe that makes it really easy to imagine how creative souls unwind with a pomegranate mimosa and the sounds of the waves breaking in the background. Though, while we were there, there was not a single artist in sight, but I guess they were sleeping or busy painting the sea.

Even though Cody’s looked cozy inside, AC and I decided to sit outside and breathe some fresh Californian air. I had Crab cake Benedict and I tried to convince AC to join my calorie-feast, but she insisted to have her healthy salad and a sandwich. However, when the food arrived and she saw all that juicy crabmeat covered in thick, tangy hollandaise, she really regretted her choice.

After our great brunch we drove down to San Diego, which was slightly disappointing. I don’t know why, but all Swedish people seem to love San Diego, and as a matter of fact, AC used to live there for a couple of months, when she was younger. The city was nice, but it was also very manicured to an extent that you felt like you were inside a theme park and not in a real city. Everything was so neat and clean that I caught myself wondering, where all the real people were hiding. Though it isn’t really fair to judge a city (and its people) based on one single visit, and I’m sure that there are lots of really nice places, which I’ll be happy to explore, when I come back someday.

One of the other days we drove to Laguna Beach and had lunch at Las Brisas. It was such a nice place! Read about it here >>

Mitzie Mee - Sanne

Los Angeles is a city you don’t quite figure out all at once. It unfolds slowly, neighborhood by neighborhood, mile by mile. Vast and sun washed, cinematic and oddly intimate, it’s a place of constant contrast. Morning hikes in the canyons. Long lunches that stretch into late afternoon. Evenings that end by the ocean with salt in your hair and traffic humming somewhere in the distance. What I love most about LA is that it feels less like a single city and more like a collection of distinct worlds stitched together by freeways and palm trees. A strip mall might hide one of the best meals you’ll have all year. A quiet residential street can lead to a view that stops you in your tracks. The glamour is there if you look for it, but so is a relaxed, everyday rhythm that makes the city surprisingly livable. On this page, I’ve gathered my Los Angeles favorites. The restaurants I return to. The neighborhoods I linger in. The places that capture the particular mix of ambition, creativity, and laid back energy that defines the city.
